Consumer Demographics and Market Strategies:

Analysis to Serve Downtown Shopping Districts

The Roundtable will be facilitated by G/FLRPC.  The presenter will be Warren A. Brown, Program Director, Program on Applied Demographics, Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research, Cornell University

One part of the puzzle to revitalize downtown shopping districts is to understand the market conditions they face. That is, what are the market conditions they face in terms of consumer demand for goods and services and competition from other shopping districts, shopping centers and big box retailers? There are four components to the analysis: regional market; local trade area; consumer segments; and market potential. In this roundtable we will present findings from a project Cornell University did for the Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District, give an overview of consumer demographics in the Genesee Finger Lakes Region, and discuss your issues and understanding of building viable community shopping districts.

A narrated slide show explaining the Cornell University process is on a web site maintained by Cornell's Community and Rural Development Institute. The slide show is available at:
http://www.cdtoolbox.org/economic_development/index.html and then select the link for Consumer Demographics and Market Strategies.
