Historic preservation is the recognition that historic and cultural properties are a living part of community life and development and vital to public interest. Preservation planning enhances the distinctive character of communities; revitalizes commercial, industrial, and residential districts; and is a powerful economic development strategy. With a wide range of municipal planning and economic development experience, G/FLRPC has the ability to assist communities with historic preservation planning—whether by identifying and gathering data on a community’s historic resources, in the preparation of a formal planning document, or coordinating a comprehensive planning process. G/FLPRC has the ability to provide technical preservation services such as planning a historic resources survey, conducting the survey, review and organization of survey data, and use of survey data in planning. Knowledgeable staff at G/FLRPC can develop stand-alone documents such as historic preservation plans, downtown or main street revitalization plans, or neighborhood improvement strategies. Survey data can also be incorporated into sections of a community’s related planning documents—such as comprehensive plans—to ensure consistency with land use policies that affect historic resources. Other municipal guidance documents and materials that G/FLRPC can provide assistance with include:
The planning process includes educating and informing elected and appointed officials, various municipal boards and personnel, and the public about the protection and enhancement of historic resources; integrating historic preservation with related policies such as housing, downtown and main street revitalization, economic development, and community character; providing information and assistance with tax credits, grant programs, and other economic incentives; and facilitating local cooperation with federal and state historic preservation programs. Other G/FLRPC education and public outreach services include:
G/FLPRC is committed to a holistic planning approach to community development—which encompasses historic preservation—and we continue to provide such consensus building tools through our program components of Economic Development, Regional, Local & Water Resources Planning, and Data, Technology & Resource Center along with our Regional Roundtables, Speakers Bureau, Regional Local Government Workshops, quarterly newsletters, and website. |
