Keuka Lake Watershed Land Use
Planning Guide: An
Intermunicipal Action Strategy
Work is underway on the Keuka Lake Watershed Land Use Planning Guide: An Intermunicipal Action Strategy. A "Working Committee" consisting mainly of participants in the Winter 2008 Land Use Leadership Alliance (LULA) training program, as well as other interested local officials, has formed to oversee work on this Intermunicipal Action Strategy. At the Working Committee's first meeting on April 29th 2008, the attendees developed a draft vision statement and agreed to focus their efforts on six key issues relating to land use and development: 1.) Regulating development on steep slopes, 2.) Working agriculture protection and enhancement, 3.) Regional Resources, 4.) Keuka Lake water quality, 5.) "Sustainable" development, and 6.) Focus new growth in village/hamlet areas. Currently, the Working Committee overseeing and assisting with the development of the draft Keuka Lake Watershed Land Use Planning Guide: An Intermunicipal Action Strategy. Each of these issues, which were initially identified during the LULA program as critical issues facing the watershed, will be discussed within the Intermunicipal Action Strategy. The Action Strategy will include detailed recommendations on how the eight participating municipalities can effectively address these issues in their land use planning and regulatory documents. The basic purpose of this Action Strategy is to provide municipal boards and officials with the information they need to upgrade their Comprehensive Plans and to develop/revise regulations such as zoning, subdivision, site plan review, and other local laws that influence development conditions in the watershed.
