The Genesee/Finger Lakes Regional Planning Council, with funding from the Genesee Transportation Council Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) purchased and classified three years of regional Landsat satellite imagery. An unsupervised classification algorithm was performed on the original 1985, 1988 and 1999 Landsat TM data from USGS using ENVI Version 3.5 (Environment for Visualizing Images). For each year, a mosaic operation created a single image of the two classified Landsat scenes that cover the Genesee/Finger Lakes Region. The images were exported to raster GRID themes using ArcView 3.2 and Spatial Analyst. Area calculations were performed using Spatial Analyst and finally the GRID themes were converted to shapefiles.
These data contain Land Cover Data of the Genesee/Finger Lakes Region. This dataset includes 4 generalized categories of Land Cover as well as an Area attribute for each Land Cover category. The Land Cover categories are Water, Urban / Built Up (includes developed areas as well as medium to large sized impervious surfaces such as major roads, parking lots, etc...), Forest (includes large forests as well as areas of moderate to low concentrations of tree cover) and Field (includes agricultural fields, pasture land, grassland and other areas of non-forest vegetation).
